Shannon's story- After graduating from College of St. Mary’s Physician Assistant School, I received an Emergency Department Fellowship offer from a prestigious hospital on Long Island, NY. There I found my desire to help some of the most vulnerable and needy patients. While in NY for almost five years, I also continued my compulsion, playing soccer on a semi-pro team in the “Big City.” I met great friends and came to call Long Island home. I bought a condo and was making life long plans there. On a visit back to Nebraska, I reconnected with the now love of my life, Anthony. I decided, really quickly, to leave NY and applied for my dream job (Trauma Surgical PA) at Nebraska Medicine back here in Omaha. All this was in a matter of a few months. While waiting to sell my condo and start my job in Omaha, I was having a ton of back pain. Pain was normal with my active soccer schedule. I thought it was probably another pulled muscle or bruise! I tried muscle relaxers, ibuprofen, Tylenol and ice/heat. The pain continued to stay and even got worse. With prompting from my Daddy, I decided to finally go to the ER. The scans at the ER were essentially normal; so I continued pushing through the pain. After another month or so and with Anthony’s insistence, I saw a GI doctor. He performed a colonoscopy and even he was surprised, given my young age and symptoms, to find a tumor in my sigmoid colon. I quickly moved back to Nebraska and with other tests and scans, found the cancer had already spread to my lungs and retroperitoneal area (Stage IV). I began working at Nebraska Medicine Trauma Surgery and also took a part time job at Methodist Hospital Emergency Department; I couldn’t give up the ER! I have had 40+ chemo treatments and even was in a colon cancer Trial Study at the National Institutes of Health, Bethesda Maryland. I am now back on maintenance chemotherapy treatments and considering other clinical trials. Yes, I married Anthony and am blessed with his family.
I don't know what my future holds, but my new passion is Pickleball! I have more loving friends and competitors to spur me on! I plan to fight as hard as I can and live lif to the fullest. I know, with God, my family, and friends on my side, I can accomplish so much more. Thank you for hearing my story!
